Scots whisky distilleries offering summer roles in some of country’s best beauty spots

SIX of Scotland’s top whisky distilleries are offering summer roles in some of the country’s most idyllic locations this summer.

There are 20 fixed-term roles available in beauty spots such as the Isle of Skye, the Argyll coast and on the NC500.

The distilleries are looking for candidates to help create experiences for visitors to Scotland’s leading whisky experiences.

The Singleton of Glen Ord, Talisker, Clynelish, Dalwhinnie, Royal Lochnagar and Oban are offering those looking for a change of career, or to extend their hospitality experience, a chance to experience life surrounded by Scotland’s natural beauty.

Dalwhinnie Distillery in the Highlands is just one of the locations looking for summer workers.

Each located in a bucket list Scottish location, with fascinating histories and heritage, the distilleries offer the perfect opening for anyone looking for a change and a chance to delve deeper into the brands synonymous with Scotland’s whisky culture.

Past work in the whisky sector is not essential for candidates – instead, new team members will be taught by experienced and knowledgeable staff, as long as they bring with them “enthusiasm, willingness to learn and a team player attitude”.

Successful candidates can look forward to a role packed with variety.

Day-to-day tasks will include leading whisky experiences, delivering outstanding customer service to guests from all over the world and supporting special events throughout the season.

Recognising the need for flexibility, employees can also expect a range of shift and working patterns to cater for people at all ages and stages of life, plus strong reward and benefits packages with many pathways to wider career opportunities across Diageo.

Those successful in the opportunities available at Skye’s oldest working distillery, Talisker, also have accommodation options on the island near the distillery, famed for its scenery.

Now retail assistant manager, Laura Hume came to Talisker 12 years ago on a fixed-term summer contract and loved it so much she never left.

When asked what her advice would be for someone considering the new roles, she said: “Go for it! Everyone is incredibly supportive here.

“It’s a great opportunity for all and opens up many doors.

“We are a diverse team ranging from school leavers with strong tech skills, to retirees who have a wealth of whisky knowledge, but the thing that brings us all together is our shared love for Skye and whisky.”

Originally a classical singer, James Cobb, lead tour guide at Dalwhinnie Distillery relocated from London to the Highlands to pursue a career in Scotch whisky in 2022.

James has found his calling in his new career which he sees as more than just a job.

He said: “I really enjoy the team dynamic here at Dalwhinnie Distillery. There’s a real sense of collaboration amongst everyone.

“The scenery also plays a big part in what makes this job special.

“Being surrounded by the Cairngorms is a dramatic change from London, and the views here are absolutely breathtaking.

“It’s not just about the work but the whole environment that makes it a unique experience.”

Christy McDonald, tour guide at Talisker, lives in the distillery housing and found his passion for the liquid when he started a whisky club at uni.

He said: ”What makes Talisker unique is the passion everyone has for the industry.

“Whisky isn’t just a job for most people, it starts as a hobby or a love of Scotch whisky, so it doesn’t feel like work.

“You’re surrounded by people who genuinely care about what they’re doing, which makes it a really special place to work.”
