Police set up patrols in Hunter Square to crack down on people consuming alcohol in the area

POLICE Scotland have set up increased patrols in Hunter Square to crack down on alcohol consumption in the area.

The officers are using the Edinburgh Bylaw which prohibits the consumption of alcohol in designated public spaces.

Hunter Square is notorious for being a hotspot for crime and disorder, described by Chief Inspector Mark Hamilton as “an area blighted by problems”.

Officers were seen in the area seemingly standing watch to prevent people from committing anti-social behaviour.

Police Scotland said on social media yesterday: “CPT and response officers have increased patrols around Hunter Square and the Old Town area

“We are focusing on alcohol consumption and utilising the Edinburgh Bylaw to seize alcohol from those involved in anti-social behaviour and criminality.

“Building safer communities together. For everyone.”

Officers are pictured talking to locals and guarding the area.

Last year, a 39-year-old was hospitalised after a fight broke out in the square, and a few months later eight arrests were made due to drug activity in the area.

Plain-clothed officers were monitoring the spot at this time, after funding was gathered to secure a “safe space” for those who often gathered there.

Following this initiative, reported incidents dropped by 25% as of November last year.
