A LOCAL has fumed over the state of the roads in the capital with an overwhelming number of main roads currently closed or slowed due to works.

Sharing a map of the ongoing works in the city yesterday one local said, “something appears to be broken in the city council”.

The map shows extensive works across the city with most of the main roads in the north of the city closed or slowed.

Between Leith’s Ferry Road and the West End there are 12 instances of road works with Ferry Road, Inverleith Row, Canonmills, Queensferry Road, the West End and Dundas Street all affected.

The newest works, a set of four-way lights installed at Canonmills on top of emergency gas works on Inverleith Row will slow traffic further in the area.

Acknowledging the need to balance road maintenance with traffic flow and disruption, the local claims the council is still failing.

The picture of the map showing 12 instances of works has been filtered to only show high impact works.

The local said there appears to be little work actually happening at the sites of the works across the city.

Out of hours work, even at emergency instances, appears to be minimal with the local stating there seems to be “little appetite for it”.

On top of the extensive works seen, that appear to be taking far too long to complete, there are road closures and minor works underway.

The local man posted yesterday to social media, saying: “Something appears to be broken in the city council.

“On the one hand it’s positive that road maintenance and upkeep is going on and that’s difficult to manage alongside emergency works.

“But most local authorities are very strict on traffic flow and the amount of disruption.”

One person suggested: “Is there maybe a rush to get money spent before the end of the financial year?”

Another said: “This has always happened in March nationwide for decades.

“It’s the end of the budget year and roadworks are the very last priority but also used as a way to spend every last penny remaining from the budget, which they do so that their budget isn’t reduced for the following year.”
