There are plenty of events to celebrate International Women’s Day this Saturday, whether you fancy a cold-water swim or would prefer to stay indoors and watch a movie.

Wild Swimming with University of Edinburgh’s FemSoc

Saturday, 8 March

Time: 6:30am

Location: Portobello Beach, What 3 Words: Sculpture.mice.agents

Edinburgh University’s feminist society will be hosting a cold-water swim at Portobello in association with Blue Tits, the university’s wild swimming society. The swim is a celebration of International Women’s Day, and will be held alongside a bake sale to raise money for Amnesty’s Mutual Aid Fund for Palestine and Blood Water, a charity that addresses Africa’s water and HIV/AIDS crises.

Celebrate Thorne Records’ third birthday

Thorne Records, which was recently named as one of the world’s best record stores, is hosting a birthday party to celebrate three years in business. Owner Mark says “Thank you everyone for making TR feel like such an important part of our community over the last three incredible years. It is an honour to serve you all. As is the TR way, we will be having a party and you are invited for beer & crisps & maybe cake.”

Watch how Poly Styrene became the first woman of colour to front a successful UK rock band

Location: Duncan Place Community Hub, 4 Duncan Place, EH6 8HW

Duncan Place will be hosting a community cinema film event screening Poly Styrene: I am a Cliché. With tickets available for just £4.44, viewers can witness how Poly Styrene coined the new sound of rebellion, singing about identity and consumerism in postmodern 1970s Britain. The frontwoman of X-Ray Spex is shown through archival material and rare diary entries to understand her as both a star and a mother.

International Women’s Day Showcase at The Jazz Bar

Saturday, 8 March

Time: 17:00 – 21:30

Location: The Jazz Bar, 1a Chambers St, EH1 1HR

Jazz aficionados Nicole Cassandra Smit and Kat Brooks have organised a whopping four house showcase to celebrate leading women in Scottish jazz. The event, hosted at the ever-popular Jazz Bar, will feature Ivy Big Band, Megan Black, Drummond & Caribe, and many others. Tickets for this show also allow entry for the next one that stars at 10pm.
