SIGNS for Edinburgh’s Hogmanay celebrations are still up in the city centre, though it has been two months since they were planned to take place

The popular events were cancelled due to forecasted high winds, leaving many disappointed and in need of ticket refunds.

Yellow council signs warning motorists not to park on Charlotte Square on December 31st last year are still up, as pointed out by locals.

Councillor Finlay McFarlane has confirmed that they will be flagged today and be taken down in the near future.

A local posted to social media yesterday, saying: “Knowing the Council, it might need to go to a vote but in my opinion it’s past time to take these signs down.

“Not least as the entire event was cancelled a day before it was meant to happen.”

A sign in Charlotte Square is pictured, saying: “Edinburgh’s Hogmanay

“No Parking

“From 17:00hrs on Tuesday 31st December 2024 to 10:00hr on Wednesday 1st January 2025”

SNP Councillor Finlay McFarlane for the City Centre commented, saying: “Will flag tomorrow AM and get them taken away.

“Not sure if others still exist so will ask for a bit of a sweep where they were installed.”

One person also replied: “Not sure this just applies to the Council.

“People still have parking permits on their windscreens dating back to 2020.”

Edinburgh’s Hogmanay celebrations, which draw in huge crowds of tourists and residents and consist of multiple events across the city, were unexpectedly cancelled last year due to ongoing adverse weather conditions.

An Edinburgh’s Hogmanay spokesperson said at the time: “We have unfortunately been unable to continue with preparations and necessary set-up for Edinburgh’s Hogmanay outdoor events due to extreme weather and forecast conditions.”

The Met Office had issued yellow weather warnings for wind and rain on New Year’s Eve, so the events were cancelled “on the grounds of public safety.”
