40mph winds over weekend see paths blocked by trees, roads closed due to falling roof tiles, and flight landings aborted

HIGH winds over the weekend caused trees to fall, roof tiles to break loose, and even flight landings to be aborted.

The Met Office gave out a yellow wind warning for Friday and Sunday, which covered all of Scotland and Northern Ireland and much of England, with wind speeds of up to 40mph.

One path near the Royal Botanic Garden Edinburgh was completely blocked off by a fallen tree, whilst Bruntsfield Place was forced to close due to falling masonry.

A video from a flight coming into Edinburgh shows an incredibly shaky landing due to the winds, after a landing was already aborted once.

As previously reported, the City of Edinburgh Council decided to close Princes Street Gardens on Friday and Sunday due to the weather warning, prompting site inspections to ensure the area was safe to reopen.

Though many were dubious over whether these measures were necessary, one local shared a picture yesterday, showing a large tree that had fallen and completely blocked a path near Warriston Gardens.

They said: “Goldenacre Path 13 completely blocked just south of the bridge at Warriston Gardens”.

This path is just half a mile from the Royal Botanic Garden Edinburgh, where hundreds of trees were damaged last month in the 100mph winds brought by Storm Éowyn.

Another user posted a shaky clip of a KLM flight from Amsterdam to Edinburgh attempting to land during the high winds on Friday morning.

They said: “My daughter’s landing into Edinburgh Airport this morning aborted because of the high wind.

“She admitted she literally s**t herself…well, almost”.

The clip shows the plane struggling against the gales before finally reaching solid ground.

On Sunday, the city continued to be battered by strong winds as Bruntsfield Place was shut by the Scottish Fire and Rescue team due to falling masonry from a tenement building.

Councillor Marie-Clair Munro for Morningside posted yesterday, saying: “Bruntsfield was blocked off by fire engines earlier today.

“I’ve been informed this was due to falling masonry/chimney stack from the tenement.

“They’ve removed the chimney and some slates and the road has now re-opened.

“They have also attended a building in viewforth just below the old school.”

Also in Morningside, locals spotted scaffolding severely damaged by winds, as pictures show parts completely falling off, posing a risk to those living nearby.

One user said yesterday: “I was just walking past and noticed that the high winds have damaged the scaffolding on this job at Falcon Gardens.

“Just posting here so that residents of that block could perhaps get in touch with the scaffolding company, just in case it’s going to be a while before the builders start work.”

A Scottish Fire and Rescue Service spokesperson said: “We were alerted at 12.19pm on Sunday, 23 February, to reports of debris coming from the roof of a tenement building on Viewforth Square, Edinburgh.

“Operations Control mobilised two fire appliances and one height vehicle to the area where firefighters removed the debris and made the area safe before leaving the scene at 1.17pm.”
