THE CITY of Edinburgh Council’s leader, Jane Meagher, has been slammed for a lack of funding for public toilets in her own ward following the announcement of the budget.

Green councillor Allys Mumford, who shares a ward with Meagher, yesterday spoke out against her counterpart over concerns about the situation in the Portobello and Craigmillar area.

Mumford pointed out that despite numerous emails from constituents describing “human faeces found in Portobello”, there was no provision in the budget to combat this.

She continued to plead with the council leader to reconsider this decision with a number of proposals for additional funding for public toilets lodged by political groups.

Despite these pleas there was no money in the budget for public toilets in Portobello at the end of the day.

The council leader’s own ward now sits with unfit public toilets that have seen numerous complaints lodged by locals over the last year.

Mumford said: “Additional public toilets don’t appear in the Labour budget and I sincerely hope this is an oversight on their part.

“It means that the temporary public toilets on the prom in the council leader’s own ward will not be funded this summer.

“Given the emails we have received this week about human faeces found in Portobello I hope she will reconsider and push for this money to be found.”

The city council’s budget for 2025/26 was approved following yesterday’s all-council meeting.

The Labour administration’s budget was passed with support from the Lib Dem and Conservative groups.
