LOCALS have been left furious after seeing shocking images of a horrendous case of fly tipping on a country road near Edinburgh.

A layby on the A6106, running through Dalkeith, Midlothian, has been left in a sorry state by fly tippers with the extent of the dumping “getting out of hand”.

An image of the extensive littering was captured by one local who stopped in the layby, and generated outrage among residents.

It shows a shocking amount of discarded rubbish left littering the woodland and grass verge bordering the country road.

Despite a bin present in the photo, people appear to prefer discarding their litter on the ground with dozens of empty wrappers left chucked out of cars.

There are a slew of bizarre items including tyres, mattresses, furniture, a dog bed and more household items left dumped in the grass.

The littering extends for tens of metres into the forest with plastic bags of rubbish visible deep in the woods.

The extent of the fly tipping is reportedly a persistent problem, especially as a Christmas tree sits still uncleared on the side of the road, nearly two months on from the big day.

Images of the extensive littering were shared to social media yesterday with the caption: “This is at the lay-by just before Fordel Services on the A68.

“Absolutely disgusting. This kind of thing is getting out of hand.”

The post sparked outrage among Dalkeith locals who left a slew of likes and comments on the images.

One said: “I hate this. It costs max £100 to take a massive van full to the Stobhill. You can do as many trips in your car as you like.

“There is no excuse for fly tipping round here. I hope their vehicle is seized and they’re fined a grand.”

Another replied: “I tried to report a truck dumping years ago. Sat on the phone for 20 minutes then gave up.”

A third said: “Absolutely no respect for the countryside. Scum.”

Another added: “What little of the countryside we have left with a lot of farmland being built on, we should protect what little land we have left.”
