Feathers ruffled as contractor sets up private parking space on public street

EDINBURGH locals have been left irritated after a private contractor set up their own parking space on a public road with fences blocking traffic from using it.

The parking job was spotted and photographed yesterday just days after it was announced that parking in Edinburgh could rise to as much as £9 an hour.

The space on Dundonald Street in the capital was blocked off by the contractor with high fences.

The fences belong to contractor and developer Individually Designed Homes (IDH), an international company.

Images show a red Volkswagen Polo parked on a double yellow line outside a block of flats on the street.

The fences surround the vehicle on all sides preventing other road users from parking anywhere near the car.

A portable toilet has also been set up within the fences which block off enough space for more than one vehicle to park.

The fencing seems to have been put up with permission from the council leaving locals ticked off at the decision, with some pointing out that bins were even moved off the street to make way for cars.

Contractors and builders can apply and pay for trade parking permits, which makes parking in major cities easier for them.

The fenced off parking space is presumably in use by IDH employees who are working on nearby properties.

The City of Edinburgh Council has been contacted for comment.
