Scottish Fire and Rescue Service responds to three Edinburgh incidents in one day

THE SCOTTISH Fire and Rescue Service has responded to three separate incidents in one day in Edinburgh.

One of the incidents in Granton saw a blaze erupt behind a Lidl store, with social media users snapping pictures of the fire.

Smoke from the blaze was visible across the city with a plume of smoke rising to the sky seen from miles away.

It’s unclear what started the fire in Granton with a similar incident the same day on Prince Regent Street seeing a fire started purposefully.

A third incident yesterday saw three fire engines respond to a smoke alarm going off on Grassmarket in the city centre.

The Scottish Fire and Rescue Service (SFRS) responded to each of the three incidents, addressing them all as appropriate.

The fire behind Lidl in Granton was photographed and shared to social media yesterday with the caption: “What’s burning beyond Calton Hill? The people have to know.”

It received over two dozen likes and comments from social media users and locals who explained what was happening.

One user wrote: “My partner and I live next to them. It’s either pallets or a caravan. A woman drove her car right through their gates last night after some arguing.

“There were two caravan fires when we first moved in. Never a dull day living next to them.”

Another joked: “It’s alright Snoop Dogg is just passing through town.”

A third said: “There’s a fire beacon thing there, maybe it’s that.”

A Scottish Fire and Rescue Service spokesperson said today (MON): “We were alerted at 5.04pm on Sunday, 16 February to reports of a fire in the open in Edinburgh.

“Operations Control mobilised one fire appliance to the city’s Waterfront Avenue, where firefighters worked to ensure the area was safe before leaving the scene.

“There were no casualties.”
