EDINBURGH’S North Bridge has been hit with further roadworks after being closed for years in a long-running restoration project.

The bridge, leading from Waverley Station to Old Town, has been closed for a restoration project for years now with works beginning in 2021.

New closures have now been announced with northbound travel over the bridge to be rendered impossible for six weeks.

The works will begin on 17 February and will result in buses being diverted along different routes.

As many as 26 separate bus services will be affected by the closure, with each of them having to take new routes to get to Princes Street.

Lothian Buses, the city’s main bus operator, has shared images showing the new routes each of the services will take following the closure.

Most will be required to travel the long way round to cross from Old Town to New Town, adding time to the journeys.

The city council has stated that they are aiming for the four year works to come to an end later this year.

Transport and environment convener, Councillor Stephen Jenkinson said: “I appreciate this temporary closure will be frustrating for our residents and businesses.

“I want to thank them for their continued patience as we carry out these essential works.

“These works are part of the wider project to restore this crucial link between the north and south of the city – and of course preserve it for future generations.

“I’m conscious that this work is taking longer to complete than we had initially anticipated, but this is this a hugely complex project, with the historic nature of the bridge requiring painstaking and specialist work to restore it to its former glory.”
