Edinburgh Airport workers back pay campaign as 58% of workers report high levels of fatigue at work

EDINBURGH Airport workers are campaigning for increased pay as Unite in Scotland’s Airports reports that 58% of Scotland’s aviation workers class their fatigue level as “not good” at work.

They are backing a pay claim for fair pay connected to Unite the Union.

Research also shows that only 16% of airport staff feel there are appropriate levels of staffing whilst on shift.

This comes just one month after Unite secured pay deals for North Air tanker drivers across Scottish airports, after threatening strike action over job security, fair pay, and suitable working conditions.

Unite in Scotland’s Airports posted yesterday, saying: “Staff at Edinburgh Airport Services Ltd are getting behind their pay campaign.

“They work hard for the airport to make eye watering profits – all they’re asking for is a fair slice of the pie.”

They shared images of workers holding signs, writing: “I’m backing the pay claim. Unite. Fair Pay now.”

A study carried out by Unite in Scotland’s Airports shows that 51% of Scotland’s aviation workers report job satisfaction as average, while 25% report it as “not good”.

Further, 58% report their fatigue levels to be “not good” and only 5% report “good” fatigue levels.

When asked “how often do you feel that you have the suitable level of appropriately skilled staff when carrying out your job”, only 16.1% replied always.

Unite recently secured a pay deal for 100 North Air workers who provide refuelling services for airlines in Scotland.

They benefitted from a basic minimum wage increase of 4.5%, and a 10% increase to shift allowance.
