A LOCAL councillor has championed the installation of new bicycle parking in the city centre, but residents have been distracted by nearby “ugly, poorly designed” benches.
Councillor Finlay McFarlane took to social media yesterday to share his success in having bike parking installed on Baxter Place in the city centre.
The councillor said the bike parking, in the form of metal polls, was installed at the request of residents and businesses.
The bike parking was installed right next to some old concrete benches though, which one local took issue with, asking the councillor why bike parking was made a priority.
The resident described the benches as “ugly” and “poorly designed” asking Councillor McFarlane if they could be removed.
The local stated that it had been an issue among other residents for a while with McFarlane responding that he managed to get the benches jet washed.
Councillor McFarlane also stated that the benches seemed to be in good use and that residents, if anything, just wanted them moved slightly.
The local was adamant however, that the benches were an eyesore and should be the focus of work in the area.
Councillor McFarlane, an SNP member of the City of Edinburgh Council, shared an image of the bike parking being installed yesterday.
The debate around the benches shown in the photos ensued shortly after with no indication that action would be taken.
One local said: “Good to see. Will they also change those ugly, poorly designed, concrete block benches for something more suitable? Also requested by local residents.”
