Tom Kitchin names Edinburgh fish and chip shop as his favourite “cheap eat”

TOM Kitchin has named a fish and chip shop in Edinburgh’s Newhaven area as his favourite “cheap eat”.

The Fishmarket at the Harbour was chosen alongside over 100 restaurants and cafes as one of the UK’s best cheap eateries.

Nine locations in Scotland were included in the list, chosen by four top chefs; Tom Kitchin, Tom Tsappis, Stephen McLaughlin, and David Smith.

The Fishmarket offers fresh fish and chips cooked to order, alongside oysters, langoustines, and a selection of wine and beer.

For a list curated by the Money blog at Sky News, award-winning chefs across the country were asked to name their favourite cheap eats, meaning places where a meal for two costs less than £40.

Kitchin, chef-owner at The Kitchin in Leith and co-founder of The Scran and Scallie in Stockbridge, recommended The Fishmarket as his favourite budget eatery.

The Michel-star winner said: “I really enjoy The Fishmarket, down by the Newhaven harbour in Edinburgh.

“They offer classic fish and chips, done incredibly well, which you can either enjoy in the restaurant or to take away.”

Among the Scottish picks were also Glasgow’s Eusebi Deli, which utilises artisanal Italian produce, and The Manchurian in Dundee which offers a wide selection of dim sum.

At The Fishmarket, customers can enjoy battered haddock with chips, mushy peas and tartare sauce for £17, or can try something different with steamed Shetland mussels cooked in white wine for £16.

Located on Pier Place in Newhaven, the market utilises the fishing trade at the historic harbour, ensuring their haddock and cod are responsibly sourced from sustainable stock.

They work alongside the long-standing family business, Welch Fishmongers, who have been catching and selling fish in the Scottish capital since 1959.

Kitchin, 47, who was once Scotland’s youngest winner of a Michelin Star, was recently forced to close his Bruntsfield restaurant, KORA, saying the current economic climate had caused struggles for the venue.
