Fire breaks out on hillside near Edinburgh, with smoke seen from miles away

A FIRE was spotted breaking out on the hills near Edinburgh, with smoke visible from the city miles away.

Images of the fire were captured by a local who spotted the smoke pouring from the fire on the hillside in Currie yesterday.

A few miles from Edinburgh, the small town sits just past the M8 to the west of the capital.

With the smoke from the blaze spotted from Edinburgh, it’s unknown what started the fire with locals theorising it could be farmers burning rubbish and others suggesting a wildfire.

The local who spotted the blaze snapped a picture of the smoke rising from the fire and shared it with social media yesterday.

He captioned his post: “Something is burning in Currie. Anyone know what it may be?”

The post received over 20 likes and more than a dozen comments from social media users theorising what could have caused the fire.

One user wrote: “This is like the film poster for the world’s lowest budget disaster movie. Well, that or the Fireman Sam live action remake.”

Another replied: “Probably just my boiler trying in vain to keep the house warm – was billowing clouds of steam this morning.”

A third said: “The Beacons of Currie are lit. Will Balerno answer?”

Another added: “Farmers burning stuff most likely.”

The Scottish Fire and Rescue Service has been contacted for comment.
