A NEW “toucan” crossing is being installed on Dalry Road, allowing safe access into the newly built Dalry Community Park.
The toucan crossing means that both pedestrians and cyclists can cross the road at the same time, using a similar signal to a normal crossing.
This is part of the work for the Roseburn to Union Canal project that saw a path created from the Union Canal towpath to the end of the North Edinburgh Path Network at Russell Road.
The new crossing allows for access to the upgraded park, with play spaces designed in consultation with pupils at Dalry Primary School in 2015.
Living Streets, a charity that promotes everyday walking in the city, posted a picture of the ongoing construction to the crossing earlier this week.
They said: “Good to see the new ‘toucan’ (pedestrian/cycle) crossing getting installed on Dalry Road.”
Temporary traffic lights are set to be in place until 25 February as part of construction.
The council states in their plans that the “crossing will permit both pedestrians and cyclists to cross the West Approach Road between the Dalry Community Park and Telfer Subway path, linking onto Dundee Street.
“This option is considered to be the most economically viable option and will provide a alternative option to using the existing Telfer subway.”
As well as the crossing, improvements to the area include an improved sports pitch surrounded by stepped terrace features, access to the park from the nearby Lidl car park and additional landscaping and woodland.
The council has planted 200 semi-mature trees along the route, and plan to plant more in spring this year.
Dozens of cyclists came out to support the opening of the Roseburn to Union Canal cycle path in December last year, applauding the city’s active travel plans.
