Police investigating after Deliveroo rider is robbed for takeaway in Leith Links

POLICE Scotland are investigating after a Deliveroo rider was robbed whilst out delivering food in a major Edinburgh area.

The rider was robbed on Saturday as he was making a delivery, being accosted as he rode through the capital’s Leith Links at around 7pm.

While taking food to a customer the delivery rider was allegedly stopped by a gang of youths in black clothing and balaclavas.

The group of around seven youths, one of them supposedly filming, forced the rider to hand over his goods, leaving him “in shock”.

Both a witness and the person whose food was stolen reported the incident on social media.

Following the robbery, the Deliveroo rider still travelled to the customer empty-handed to explain what had happened.

A witness described the scene as the delivery rider was stopped in his tracks by the gang.

The rider was reportedly forced to hand over his bag and the takeaway inside to the youths who filmed the crime before making off with the food.

The customer whose food was stolen described the aftermath of the robbery stating: “I went out to meet him as I saw he was close on the app.

“The poor bloke only spoke broken English and was clearly in shock. He assured me he wasn’t hurt and that he was phoning the police.

“I told him it didn’t matter about my food and I just hoped he was okay. These f***ing wee b*****ds are getting out of hand though.”

A post to social media about the incident made on Saturday reads: “Deliveroo bike rider just got robbed in Leith Links

“Just saw a delivery rider get stopped by seven balaclava’d (sic) youths and made to hand over his food bag. One was filming.

“Happened on the cycle path/footpath near the kids’ play area.”

Police Scotland confirmed they were looking into the incident today, with a spokesperson saying: “Police received information from a member of the public on Saturday, 1 February 2025 regarding a delivery driver being robbed by a group of male youths around 6:50pm that evening in the Leith Links area of Edinburgh

“Enquiries are ongoing.”
