Scots butcher selling meaty twist on the classic Battenberg cake, stuffed with sausage meat and black pudding

A SCOTS butcher has put a meaty twist on a classic English cake, by creating a Battenberg made from breakfast staples.

Grossett’s Butchers in Dundee has come up with the unconventional dish, which contains the distinctive checkerboard pattern unique to a Battenberg but is made out of steak sausage meat and black pudding instead of sponge.

Rather than the traditional layer of marzipan around the outside, the wacky butcher looks to have opted for a layer of pastry.

Grossett’s Butchers has been around since 1932 and specialises in Aberdeen Angus beef, but it’s not the first time they have created a variation on the British dessert classic, having made a similar “cake” using alternating squares of black and white pudding last year.

They posted to social media yesterday, saying “The Battenberg is back, this time with steak sausage meat and black pudding…delish (sic).”

A picture shared shows the roll after it has been prepared, in the conventional cuboid shape with raw meat and black pudding inside.

The post received over 60 likes and comments from locals excited to try the invention.

One user said: “I must have missed that last time…looks braw”.

Another exclaimed: “Keep some for me.”

Whilst a third added: “Very clever, love it.”

Current owner, Gilbert Grossett, also received success with his black and white pudding Battenberg, coined in March last year.

After posting about the delicacy at the time, Gilbert received over 220 likes and more than 70 comments, all praising the eccentric idea.

One user had remarked: “I salute you, from Stornoway. Need to give these a bash.”

Whilst another commented: “Bacon or lorne around the edge would be perfect especially on a roll”.

And one more supported the idea, saying: “Very clever, looks yum”.

Gilbert said today: “I saw the classic Battenberg and thought I could do a savoury version.

“I did one last year with black and white pudding, but it works much better with the sausage meat added.

“My son made the one in the picture. We use a square tin to create the design.

“We sell quite a lot of it. People you never see in the shop will see it on Facebook and come in to try it.”
