Two Edinburgh Bank of Scotland branches set to close following shift towards digital banking

FOLLOWING a shift towards digital banking, two Bank of Scotland branches in Edinburgh are set to close.

The Wester Hailes and Corstorphine West branches of the Bank of Scotland in the Scottish capital will be among 14 to close across the country.

Lloyds Banking Group will also shut 61 Lloyds Bank branches and 61 Halifax branches across the country in a major closure sweep.

This follows an announcement made just weeks ago that customers of the Lloyds group could use any of the company’s three brand branches to do their banking.

The branch closures come amid a growing shift towards digital and online banking with Lloyds Group’s branch network being cut by 15%.

According to Lloyds, the use of their in-person services has fallen by a whopping 48% over the past five years.

The slew of closures leaves the banking group with just 757 locations nationwide by next year.

Concerns have been raised over potential job cuts following the announcement of the closures.

In total 136 branches will close amidst the dramatic shift towards app-based banking adopted by customers.

A Lloyds Banking Group spokesperson said: “Over 20 million customers are using our apps for on-demand access to their money, and customers have more choice and flexibility than ever for their day-to-day banking.

“Alongside our apps, customers can also use telephone banking, visit a Community Banker or use any Halifax, Lloyds or Bank of Scotland branch, giving access to many more branches.

“Customers can also do their everyday banking at over 11,000 branches of the Post Office or in a banking hub.”

The full list of Bank of Scotland branches set to close is as follows: Alexandria, Annan, Barrhead, Bishopbriggs, Edinburgh – Corstorphine West, Edinburgh – Wester Hailes, Helensburgh, Kirkintilloch, Moffat, Peebles, Pitlochry, Sanquhar, Thornhill and Uddingston.
