Probe into former council leader reveals potential complaints made as far back as 2006

A PROBE into the behaviour of former City of Edinburgh Council leader Cammy Day will investigate potential complaints as far back as 2006.

It was revealed yesterday that the investigation into Day’s behaviour will look at “potential complaints” first made about him almost two decades ago.

The news comes after a difficult couple of months for the former leader of the city council, who stepped down in December last year.

Day was suspended by the Labour party and stepped down from his senior role on the city council after allegations were made that he had inappropriately messaged two Ukrainian refugees.

Police Scotland are looking into allegations that Day sent inappropriate messages following complaints made against him in October 2024.

The council also received two complaints about Day at the end of 2023 when Day was still council leader.

The council has now backed an independent review of how complaints are dealt with.

The review will investigate the handling of a “potential complaint” made against Day in 2006, before he was elected to the city council.

City councillors will meet to approve the investigations remit and appoint an individual to lead it next week.

Cammy Day was elected as a councillor in 2008, became deputy leader of the City of Edinburgh Council in 2017 and ultimately ascended to leader in 2022.

The complaints made against him include the potential complaint in 2006, one made last October and two made at the end of 2023.

Day’s career in politics came to an abrupt end when the Mail on Sunday revealed the allegations made by the two Ukrainian refugees in December last year.

They alleged he bombarded them with inappropriate messages with one telling of how he added them on social media and a dating site.

The scandal unfolded and was quickly followed by allegations that the council received a number of complaints about his behaviour over the years.
