Flurry of Edinburgh youth mischief peaks with bizarre assault that sees man “dazed” after having an onion thrown at his head

YOUTH crime and mischief in Edinburgh seems to have peaked with a bizarre assault that saw one man “dazed” after being hit with an onion.

One local claims to have watched the incident unfold on Gorgie Road yesterday, when two youths riding electric bikes flew past and took aim at a passerby.

At least one of the pair then allegedly pelted the bloke with an onion as they passed, hitting him on the head and supposedly sending him tumbling to the ground.

The odd assault comes amid a rise in youth-led minor crimes in the Scottish capital with residents becoming increasingly concerned.

The witness to the attack described the youths as “neds” and claims to have watched them fly along the street on their e-bikes.

The duo then apparently utilised the fresh produce as a makeshift weapon, pelting it at a group of men as they passed.

One of the group was then struck with the onion, which “disintegrated on impact”, resulting in the bloke falling to his knees, dazed and believing that he had been hit with a rock.

The incident was reported to Police Scotland before the local took to social media to warn others in the area.

They wrote: “Was just walking down Gorgie Road when two teens on electric bikes zoomed past and threw an onion at some guys standing opposite us.

“Happened right opposite the Greggs around 9:20pm.

“Sounds silly, but the (large) onion disintegrated on impact and hit the guy right in the back of the head.

“Made a loud sound (both the impact and the bloke), the guy dropped to his knees looking dazed, so it looked more serious as it reads.

“He was with his mates, so I left him with them, but the man thought he was hit by a rock.

“We do get p****s on bikes here, but it’s the first time I’ve seen something as blatant as this. I’ll be reporting it and think that the Scotmid should have caught it on CCTV.

“So bizarre. Neds will never see the consequences of this, and it’s scary to see them going this far and attack people. So, if anyone’s around the area, look out.”

Police Scotland did not confirm the nature of the incident but said today: “Around 10:05pm on Wednesday, 29 January, officers received a report of an assault on Gorgie Road, Edinburgh.

“Enquiries are ongoing.”
