Water of Leith community mural defaced yet again by vandals

THE Water of Leith Conservation Trust has shared the sad news that their Coalie Park murals have been defaced yet again.

In a social media post shared on Sunday the trust showed images of their murals and the damage done to them.

Spray paint was used to “tag” the murals with words and names, covering the artwork that was originally there.

This is the second time the murals in Coalie Park, just off the Water of Leith, have been defaced by vandals.

The mural artwork in Coalie Park was put up as part of a revamping project in the area in April of last year.

Phase two of the Coalie Park Project saw the development of a seating area with planters, creation of skate features, improvement to existing seating areas and paths and creation of public art works and street art murals.

Since being put up, the murals have been defaced a number of times by unknown individuals who spray paint over them.

This time, a number of words and names were spray painted over the murals and even some of the seating areas.

Images show the murals almost entirely covered by the graffiti with the Water of Leith Conservation Trust calling it “disappointing”.

There was local outcry following the discovery of the graffiti, with the Water of Leith Conservation Trust receiving over 75 likes and more than a dozen comments on their post.

The post was captioned: “Disappointed to report the Coalie Park mural has been hit with tagging again. We’ll start the process of repainting it in the near future.”

One local said: “This is so sad. You’d think they’d leave this alone because it looked nice?”

Another replied: “So sad to see this after all the work that the community have put into the painting of the mural.”

A third wrote: “Could it be made into a legal graffiti space?

“I get than one design is more cohesive, but if people had the opportunity to paint it legally there would be nicer, changing artworks, like in the Marine Parade wall.”

Another commented: “Inevitable sadly, empty heads with nothing better to do.”

A fifth added: “How sad after all the hard work.”

The Water of Leith Conservation Trust has been contacted for comment.
