What is the UEFA Champions League?

Established in 1955 as the European Cup, the competition was rebranded as the UEFA Champions League in 1992.

This annual tournament is organised by the Union of European Football Associations (UEFA) and features top-division clubs from across Europe.

The Champions League is renowned for its electrifying matches, iconic anthem, and the ultimate prize of being crowned Europe’s best club.

Participating teams

Clubs earn their place in the Champions League based on their performance in their respective domestic leagues.

UEFA’s coefficient ranking system, which assesses the strength of each league, determines the number of qualifying spots per country.

Football powerhouses like Real Madrid, Barcelona, Bayern Munich, Paris Saint Germain and Liverpool are regular fixtures in the tournament, contributing to its rich history and fierce competition.

In recent years, teams such as Manchester City and Borussia Dortmund have risen to prominence, further shaking up the Champions League betting odds for fans and pundits alike.

Tournament format

This is the first year that the new Swiss Style group stage was introduced, in order to make games more competitive and give new sides a chance of qualifying.

The group stage in the new Champions League format has been replaced by a league phase, where 36 teams play eight matches against different opponents, home and away. The top eight teams advance directly to the knockout rounds, while teams finishing 9th to 24th enter a playoff to secure the remaining eight spots.

Despite finishing first in the league phase, the new format means Liverpool, currently leading the standings, could still face heavyweight opponents like Real Madrid or Juventus in the early knockout rounds.

This unpredictability arises from UEFA’s revised coefficient rankings, which are still in flux, leading to matchups that wouldn’t traditionally occur so early.

While fans of top clubs might lament the lack of an easier path to the final in Munich, the prospect of early clashes between European giants adds excitement and drama for neutral viewers.

This shake-up ensures the knockout stages remain must-watch football, even if it sacrifices some fairness for spectacle.

From there, the tournament retains its usual intensity, as each round edges closer to crowning Europe’s best. The single-leg final, set to take place in Munich this season, promises a fitting climax to a revamped, drama-packed competition.

The winner not only claims the prestigious trophy but also secures a spot in the UEFA Super Cup and the FIFA Club World Cup.

Champions League legacy

The Champions League is more than just a football competition—it showcases history, legacy, and unforgettable moments.

From last-minute winners to dramatic comebacks and underdog triumphs, the tournament continues to captivate fans across the world.

The stakes are always high, with each match potentially altering the betting landscape and shaping the dreams of millions of supporters.
