Storm Éowyn: Huge chimney falls in New Town, smashing onto the street below.

A HUGE chimney in Edinburgh’s city centre was just one of the many casualties of Storm Éowyn as it was sent tumbling to the ground.

The large chimney on Howe Street in the capital’s New Town area was seen in pieces on the roof of the building on Friday, with debris having fallen onto the pavement.

One piece managed to break through the front steps below, falling through to the basement level of the New Town building.

Firefighters were later seen attending the incident with a crane carrying out a cleanup of the site.

A picture of Howe Street was shared on Friday, showing the battered chimney in bits on the roof.

The post received over 470 likes and 50 comments, with many shocked at the damage, and concerned that someone could have been hurt.

One user shared a picture of the chimney before the day of the storm, which shows it to be almost as tall as one of the building’s three floors, with four funnels attached.

They said: “Mad looking chimney to begin with.”

To which someone replied: “It’s almost like it’s designed to catch the wind!”

Another user commented: “All things considered, I’m impressed with the strength of the roof and windows.”

And another remarked: “You would be scared of the things I see when surveying roofs. Stayed firmly indoors today.”

A fifth commiserated: “It survived over 200 years, so sad.”

Whilst another joked: “Aptly named shop to the left” in reference to a neighbouring shop called Bric.

A red alert was in place for parts of the country on Friday, with people urged to stay indoors from the hours of 10am to 5pm.

The Met Office warned against a possible “danger to life” as gusts of up to 100mph were recorded, causing damage across much of Edinburgh.

Fallen trees killed two men, one in Ireland and another 19-year-old, whose car was struck in East Ayrshire on Friday morning.
