A PASSENGER who was onboard a flight set to land in Edinburgh during Friday’s storm has shared details of what it was like in the moments before touchdown.
The Ryanair flight FR1010 departed from Budapest and landed in Edinburgh at around 8:09am, but not before a failed landing.
The flight was under extreme weather conditions due to Storm Éowyn, which hit the country on Friday morning.
A red warning was sent for the day, but a few flights still braved the 100mph winds to land in various airports in the UK.
One passenger onboard the Budapest to Edinburgh flight took to social media to tell of the terrifying conditions they were forced to land in.
They said: “FR1010 from Budapest to Edinburgh. Nearly s**t myself.
“I absolutely cannot believe Ryanair let that plane fly. We were all so terrified and deadly silent.
“The plane moved terribly and you could not see anything. I didn’t take pictures or record because I genuinely thought I maybe wouldn’t even make it.
They went on to say: “We had a failed landing with a sudden push of one of the wings which tipped us off and led to the pilots pulling us back up.
“We had to try again or go to Manchester. I don’t know how, but they did it and landed.
“We were absolutely s******g ourselves.
“To make things worse, there was a mayday type [of noise] beeping over and over.
“This was so scary when you couldn’t see anything but fog outside, not knowing what the hell it meant.
“The lights also glitched out once and the seatbelt sign kept going on and off.”
A video of the flight was also shared online, showing the plane almost keeling over before landing on the tarmac.
One user commented: “That wasn’t a smooth landing, but glad that everyone is safe.”
Whilst another said: “Edinburgh Airport has the best pilots in the world. I used to fly from there at some point in my life and they are truly top pilots.”
On Friday, Edinburgh Airport stated: “No flights will operate during the red weather warning between 10am and 5pm.”
Almost 100 flights were cancelled, which affected 13,500 passengers.
The individual onboard the flight from Budapest also said: “I really don’t know how I kept my cool.
“I thought it would’ve been over.
“Absolutely crazy how that flight was not canceled and I’m so grateful for the pilots who landed us back to safety.
“Even while landing, the plane was tilting left and right in a manner that had us thinking the wing would slide off the runway and knock us over.
“Really scary stuff. Praying for the people on the flight from London. Diverting is the safest option.”
Another flight from Stansted to Edinburgh on Friday morning was forced to abort and return to London after two hours and 44 minutes in the air.
Five minutes before flight RUK94JV was supposed to land it was the most watched plane on flight radar, with thousands anxiously watching the pilots circle the airport.
