STORM Éowyn is set to batter the UK today, but Edinburgh locals are reacting in a typically Scottish way.
The Met Office has issued a red warning for areas in Scotland, Ireland, and the north of England, but many aren’t letting this get them down.
Numerous workplaces, shops, and restaurants have announced they will be closing during the red alert, leading many to joke about how they will spend their day off, having been told to stay inside.
Locals have been divided over how best to prepare for the storm, with some taking to panic buying in supermarkets last night and others choosing to make the most of the city-wide lockdown.
One user posted to an Edinburgh forum yesterday saying: “What is everyone doing to prepare for tomorrow’s red weather?
“Any special weekend plans? I put a brick on my bin, hope that helps. Also hope my neighbour doesn’t find out I stole their brick.”
This post gained over 145 likes and 160 comments with one user replying: “I’ve ripped the roof off of our building, I think that was the safest thing to do.
“The rest of the building tenants are shouting and screaming at me, but for sure they’ll thank me tomorrow when the roof doesn’t blow off.”
Another commented: “I’ve pre toppled my wheelie bins, they might not try to escape if they’re already in the lying down position.”
Someone else proposed similar preemptive measures: “I’ve thrown my trampoline over the fence into next door’s garden. Should have it back by Saturday.”
A fourth is deciding to make use of potential 100mph winds: “Going up the Pentlands with a wing suit, who’s coming?”
Another aspiring daredevil said: “Two IKEA big blues, lycra bodysuit, roller skates, pads, helmet, goggles, and a mate with a stopwatch.
“Gonna crack the new land speed record, lads. Been doing squats for aerodynamics and everything.”
And one more hoping to outwit the flight cancellations at Edinburgh Airport joked: “Flying my kite, if I keep hold of it, I reckon I might make it to Denmark.”
On a separate post, another user flippantly asked: “Does anyone know if it’s going to be sunny tomorrow?
“I want to take a dog for a nice walk but not sure of the weather.”
The question received over 40 likes and more than 30 comments, with one local replying: “I heard there’s a red-hot weather warning so make sure you wear your sun cream and stock up on ice lollies.”
Another confirmed: “Sunny with a chance of trampolines.”
