“It’s not even funny anymore”: Edinburgh road repairs branded “embarrassing” as mere metre-long yellow lines painted onto junction

ROAD repairs carried out in Edinburgh have been branded “embarrassing” after recent work saw miniscule yellow lines painted onto a junction.

Images shared by a local to social media show the useless yellow lines painted on the junction amidst ever growing upset over the quality of the capital’s “embarrassing” roads.

The yellow lines appear to be painted on as part of road repairs with freshly set tarmac laid underneath them.

Over the weekend the city was named as the “pothole capital of Scotland” with it topping the list of cities in the country with shoddy roads.

All of this occurred just days after National Pothole Day, with ever-growing upset among locals over the deteriorating state of Auld Reekie’s roads.

The miniature yellow lines shown in the photo sparked furious debate online with locals galore complaining about the useless addition to the repair.

About a metre long in total, the yellow lines on the junction serve little to no purpose other than replacing the faded lines underneath.

The shoddy patch job remains cordoned off with large plastic blue fences, and the junction and pedestrian crossing obstructed despite the works appearing complete.

A local who was outraged by the repair shared an image of it to social media yesterday with the caption: “It’s not even funny anymore (roads).

“Surely, I mean surely, they are taking the piss. We can’t do any road, any pavement right. Where does the incompetence sit for this (exactly)?”

Their post has received over 190 likes and more than 60 comments from locals debating the repairs.

One user wrote: “I just got back from a trip to Germany and it’s embarrassing how bad our road maintenance is compared to them. The difference is extremely stark.”

Another replied: “It’s the distinction in the paint that gets me. The road markings in most of Edinburgh rely on you somehow mind melding with tarmac.”

A third said: “Those line painters need to be heated and primed, don’t they? What a waste of energy and effort. Also, I bet the bloke that painted them charged a full day’s work.”

Another commented: “I’m all for utilities and their contractors being held to a higher standard but this is perfectly adequate.

“They’ve returned their works area to how it was pre-excavation.”

A fifth added: “Edinburgh’s roads are probably beyond repair now. At best it will be patching, temporary pothole-filling and the odd stretch of resurfacing.

“This is typical of the piece-meal approach to road repairs.”  A City of Edinburgh Council spokesperson has today clarified that the repairs were carried out by Scottish Water and that “the Council was not responsible for this particular repair”.

Speaking today a Scottish Water spokesperson said: “We attended on Friday to repair a burst water pipe on George Street in Edinburgh and a full reinstatement of the road was carried on the same day.

“We aim to return the working area to how it was pre-excavation however any new material used has not been subject to ageing or weathering and may change over time.”
