Leith community organisation looks for support as council vote on LTN looms

A COMMUNITY organisation is garnering support as the City of Edinburgh Council gears up to vote on making a trial LTN (low traffic neighbourhood) permanent.

Liveable Leith, a community organisation focused on maintaining Leith is campaigning for support in the lead up to the vote.

The group is asking members of the community to email the councillors who will make the decision, namely members of the traffic regulation orders sub-committee.

The decision on whether the LTN will be made permanent rests on the members of the sub-committee who will vote on it on 18 February.

Before then, the transport and the environment committee will hear about the scheme and its impact.

The council has funded a six-month and 12-month monitoring report for the LTN scheme which was hailed as a success.

The first report, six months into the trial period, showed hugely reduced traffic with locals reporting high satisfaction with the schemes effect.

In the 12-month report locals likewise hailed the project as a success with traffic being lowered and locals cycling more.

Liveable Leith are urging members of the community to get in touch with councillors and express a want for the scheme to be made permanent.

The organisation says if the scheme is scrapped the money spent on it so far will be wasted and the benefits lost.

The organisation says: “Liveable Leith is a new group bringing together local people who have been working for a while to make Leith a safer, healthier and greener place for all.

“Our current priority is that the traffic measures introduced under the liveable neighbourhood part of the Leith Connections project (also known as the low traffic neighbourhood) are made permanent.”

The City of Edinburgh Council has been contacted for comment.
