Building evacuated in Edinburgh city centre over fears of “hazardous materials”

A BUILDING in Edinburgh city centre was evacuated yesterday after reports of a hazardous material in one of the rooms.

All residents were asked to leave the building in the area of The Pleasance, and the road was closed off soon after.

Whilst it’s unclear what the hazardous material was exactly, the contents apparently commanded a significant response.

Pictures show a police cordon on the road, with multiple police vehicles present, and officers talking to pedestrians.

Thankfully, fears were relieved soon after, with the materials being identified as non-hazardous and residents being allowed back in.

A spokesperson for Police Scotland said today: “Around 4:45pm on Sunday, 19 January, we were called to a building on The Pleasance, Edinburgh, following the discovery of potentially hazardous materials within one of the rooms.

“An exclusion area was put around the building which was evacuated as a precaution.

“Residents were provided shelter. It was established that the materials were not hazardous.

 “Enquiries are ongoing.”
