RESIDENTS in Granton have been left horrified at the state of their communal bins, which have become dumping grounds for waste and household rubbish.
Locals from the area have taken online to share images of the overflowing bins, questioning why rubbish has been left on the side of the street without removal.
One picture even shows a clinical waste bag on the ground beside a bin, potentially holding contaminated or infectious objects.
Locals are divided over the issue, with some calling on the council to promptly remove the waste, and others placing the blame on their ill-mannered neighbours.
In a post shared last week, images show two bins sitting surrounded by rubbish bags and loose items, with one completely filled to the brim with black bags.
The picture shows an orange clinical waste bag on the ground, in the midst of the clutter, though it is unclear what it holds.
The caption reads: “Clinical waste dumped in communal bins. Who on earth dumps this in a place full of children!?”
One user replied: “I stay in the area and people are absolutely disgusting and ridiculous!
“They come by car and dispose of a number of bags and household items, often just dump them on the street.
“This has been reported to the council on a number of occasions, but nothing gets done about it.
“No matter whether it’s clinical waste or not, those bins should never be in this state. People come and treat this area as a ‘recycling point’ which is not. Absolutely awful”
On a separate post on the same day, another user shared pictures of communal gardens trashed with litter, streets lined with mattresses and abandoned furniture, and miscellaneous rubbish covering the ground.
Their caption reads: “New Year same old s**t.
“If anyone can advise me why Edinburgh Council’s response to this is essentially to fob folk who complain off with vague promises of action I’d love to know.
“Do we have to wait for a horde of rats for action to be taken? Maybe embarrassing the council/perpetrators in the local press might do something?
“It feels very much like as long as the city centre is clean for tourists and the council can point to the ‘regeneration’ existing, Granton residents are being ignored and having to live in filth.”
The post garnered 40 likes and 63 comments, with many criticising those dumping their unwanted scraps, and others calling for the council to intervene.
One user said: “Out of sight out of mind, that’s how the council see it.
“Our back communal garden has been a dive for well over ten years, they refuse to touch it.”
Another replied: “So many people are blaming the council, but it’s not the council dumping rubbish in the Wardieburn or Granton area—it’s your own neighbours.
“I know how it is; I’ve lived in Wardieburn for the last nine years, and nothing has changed. Sadly, people just don’t care and continue to create a mess.”
A third stated: “It’s sad the council doesn’t provide adequate solutions and it’s sad residents feel it’s ok to treat the place they live in like this.
“As a wheelchair user it makes it really hard to navigate safely and autonomously.”
A fourth remarked: “Sorry folks, you are barking up the wrong tree in my opinion.
“Unless the community-minded people come together and confront the people doing this, nothing will happen.
“Why blame the council? Yes, you can ask housing officers to do more but unless society changes and takes responsibility for creating their own s**t, nothing will change.”
