Well-loved Edinburgh sushi restaurant announces sudden closure, leaving customers devastated

A POPULAR sushi restaurant in Edinburgh has announced that it has closed its doors.

Umai Sushi and Ramen Kitchen revealed the sad news on New Year’s Eve, bidding farewell to the loyal customers who have enjoyed their food over the years.

The Dalry restaurant, which was situated on Queensferry Street until March last year, has been a staple for lovers of Japanese cuisine in the capital for years.

The eatery’s closure comes less than a year after it made the move from its original location, with customers devastated at the end of the “best sushi in Edinburgh”.

In March last year, the restaurant announced their move from Queensferry Street to Dalry Road, saying: “Hey guys, we’re so excited to share that our new restaurant at 84 Dalry Road will be opening on 8th March.

“This could change (may be the 7th) so keep an eye on our socials for updates next week!

“With the opening of our new location, we will be closing the doors of the original Umai on Sunday 3rd.

“It’s the end of an era but we’re so excited for the start of this next chapter.

“We hope to see you this weekend for your final Umai Queensferry Street fix!”.

On 31 December though, the restaurant, which has received countless five-star reviews from happy locals over the years, wrote: “Dear Edinburgh, come 2025, we will be closing our doors for the last & final time.

“We wanted to share our gratitude to everyone who enjoyed a visit with us and showed their support in our venture.

“It’s been our pleasure! Wishing everyone a safe and happy new year.

“Thank you and farewell – the team at Umai along Dalry Rd.”

The restaurant describes its story as that of “a French man not afraid of new challenges, who fell in love with Japanese food and anime culture countless years ago”.

The announcement has received over 40 likes and more than 20 comments from gutted locals sad to see Umai go.

One user wrote: “This has been our favourite sushi place ever. So sorry to hear this.”

Another commented: “This is so sad.

“My other half and I come to your restaurant every year as an anniversary treat to ourselves. We will sorely miss the sushi and the atmosphere.”

A third replied: “Honestly the best sushi in Edinburgh. My son and I travel from Bathgate to enjoy it, this is so sad.”

Another added: “Devastated. You were the best.”

A fifth said: “You’re closing? No! Your sushi was phenomenal and such great prices, I’m devastated.”
