Message in a bottle dating back over 110 years discovered in popular Edinburgh theatre

A MESSAGE in a bottle dating back over 110 years has been discovered hidden in a popular Edinburgh theatre.

Historian and photographer Mike Hume found the 118-year-old bottle and its contents whilst on a tour of the King’s Theatre on Leven Street yesterday.

Mike spotted something wedged behind one of the decorative crowns above the stage, which was soon dislodged from its hiding spot by staff.

Further investigation revealed the object to be a bottle containing a message clearly dated 1906, which coincidentally aligns with the opening of the theatre in the same year.

The team at the King’s Theatre plan to take the bottle to the Scottish Conservation Studio to have it safely opened and examined to reveal the full message.

Sharing the discovery on social media the Kings Theatre team said: “A message in a bottle, hidden at the King’s Theatre for 118 years.

“Whilst on a tour of the theatre last week, King’s supporter, theatre photographer and historian Mike Hume discovered an object behind one of the ornate crowns above the stage.

“A bottle with a folded piece of paper inside – visibly marked with the date 1906. As if by miracle, this discovery has coincided with the anniversary of the King’s Theatre’s opening – also in 1906.

“Stay tuned for updates as we head to The Scottish Conservation Studio to safely open it and see what’s inside.”

Speaking to the King’s Theatre team Mike said: “It’s crazy to think that this time capsule has been hiding in plain sight for nearly 120 years, silently bearing witness to every performance at the King’s.

“Can’t wait to find out what’s inside. Maybe a new bottle goes up there for the next 120 years?”
