Man charged with attempted murder of police officer following hit and run in capital

A MAN has been arrested and charged in connection with the attempted murder of a police officer following a hit-and-run in the Scottish capital.

Lewis Mackie, 21, appeared in Edinburgh Sherrif Court on Monday charged with attempted murder and several driving-related offences.

It is alleged he tried to kill a police officer in Edinburgh on Friday when officers tried to stop a stolen vehicle.

The stolen car was spotted by cops on Dumbryden Gardens in Wester Hailes, who attempted to stop the vehicle.

The driver of the vehicle panicked and fled, hitting one officer with the car as he tore off, leaving him with serious injuries.

A male police officer was taken to hospital for treatment following the collision and has since been released.

The dramatic incident took place in the early morning at around 1am with the stolen car soon being found abandoned by the driver near the scene.

Mackie was later arrested and charged in connection with the incident and has since appeared at the Edinburgh Sheriff Court where he submitted no plea.

Mackie has been remanded to custody where he will remain until he appears at his next court session.

Mackie is charged with attempted murder, theft and several other driving related offences incurred on the night in question.

These include driving without insurance, failing to stop for police officers and driving while banned.
