Edinburgh locals living in poverty offered free access to local cultural experiences thanks to new scheme

EDINBURGH locals living in poverty can now access local leisure and cultural experiences for free thanks to a new scheme.

Forever Edinburgh unveiled the initiative yesterday, which is being delivered via its Resident Rewards programme, local tourism businesses and the One City Trust charity.

Resident Rewards Gives Back will see nearly 500 opportunities in and around the capital offered to locals living in poverty or facing social inequality.

It has been praised by the city’s Lord Provost, Robert Aldridge, for its efforts in making tourism more inclusive.

A network of local charities and community groups will distribute the experiences in partnership with One City Trust.

The scheme is not limited just to Christmas, with Forever Edinburgh rolling it out [during] “this festive season and beyond”.

Attractions taking part include Camera Obscura and World of Illusions, Edinburgh Castle, Department of Magic escape rooms, Edinburgh Bus Tours and Go Ape at Dalkeith Country Park.

Charities dealing with areas including homelessness, disability support, mental health and support for youths and the elderly are involved.

Speaking yesterday, Edinburgh’s Lord Provost Robert Aldridge said: “These fantastic donations are hugely welcome and will help nearly 500 people in the city to create lasting memories.

“Everyone should have the opportunity to experience being a tourist in their home city, and to enjoy the incredible events and attractions we have on offer.

“Forever Edinburgh is on a drive to make sure the city’s tourism offering is truly inclusive and these contributions will be gifted to local people through our charity partners, adding to the 8,400 discounts and experiences exclusively for residents that have already been enjoyed.

“It gives a chance to people who otherwise would not be able to experience these great attractions, and I’d like to extend my gratitude to all organisations who have stepped up to make the new initiative possible and who have exceeded our expectations.

“Their generosity is supporting the One City Trust in its efforts to tackle inequality across our communities.”
