Firework tribute for 20-year-old Henry Farron killed in tragic crash causes divide amongst locals

A TRIBUTE for a 20-year-old who was killed on Sunday has caused backlash amongst Edinburgh residents.

Henry Farron, an Edinburgh local, was involved in a fatal crash with a grey Volvo XC60 on Dundee Street in Fountainbridge

Henry was pronounced dead at the scene of the crash, after emergency services attended following reports of a collision between a car and a pedestrian.

A 51-year-old man has been arrested and released pending further enquiries which remain ongoing, according to a statement by Police Scotland

Sergeant Dave Waddell stated: “Our thoughts remain with Henry’s family and friends, as they come to terms with their tragic loss.

“An investigation into the circumstances of the crash remains ongoing and we continue to ask for any witnesses, or anyone with information, to please come forward.”

A fireworks tribute for the young man was organised to take place in Victoria Park yesterday evening but caused a stir with residents who were unhappy about the disruption.

Yesterday, an anonymous social media user posted in a group for residents of the area, announcing: “Just warning everyone that lives near Victoria Park that there will be fireworks set off between 17:30-18:30 for the young lad who died on Sunday.

“Thank you for understanding.”

The post received 65 likes and comments from some residents who were quick to disagree with the use of fireworks to commemorate the young man.

One user said: “RIP to the young man who lost his life, but when did this become normal to celebrate a life?

“Surely there are less disruptive ways that don’t impact on such a big part of the community? Or as others have said, at least choose low noise fireworks.”

Another said: “Why? Can they not just do a laser light show instead?”

Some raised concern about harm caused by fireworks on the surroundings, and a study on The Environmental Impacts of Fireworks by Earth.Org was sent to the anonymous poster.

Others defended the right of Henry Farron’s friends and family to pay tribute to a life tragically cut short, with one user commenting: “Rather insensitive comments to a family grieving and wanting to do something in honour.

“RIP and enjoy those beautiful fireworks in memory of your loved one.”

Another declared: “Some folk should get a grip, close your windows for an hour, comments like ‘should have had laser shows, silent fireworks’ etc, get a grip.

“Scroll on if you only have something negative to say. Honestly, what is this world coming to?

“Make that fireworks display as loud as you want, celebrate your loved one in any way you see fit, sending condolences to family and friends, enjoy their memories.”
