Budding Scots creatives can kick off new year with Burns-inspired writing and photography weekend

BUDDING creatives the chance to sign up for a Burns-inspired photography course in the Highlands to bring in the New Year.

National newspaper photographer Colin McPherson and writer Jean West have devised a workshop inspired by the nation’s bard, set in five-star luxury.

The duo, who have collaborated over decades on major stories, have teamed up with Ness Walk Hotel in the heart of the Scottish Highlands for a workshop with a difference.

Inspired by Burns Night, a slap-up feast, and the writings of the spirited poet, they will roll out a three night, two-day workshop drawing to help participants give extra zing to their writing and photography skills – costing from just £368.

They are calling on rookie writers and photographers to be brave and dig deep into latent talent to produce something they can be proud of. The workshop is aimed at who want to have a go at travel writing – and there will be plenty of colour to draw on from the natural world and ancient and historic Inverness.

But the pair are also excited to encourage those keen to establish a blog or who simply want a go at making a professional diary of their hobbies.

Mr McPherson, whose work has been exhibited in the National Galleries of Scotland, said: “We want to pass on our skills, expertise and confidence so that participants feel they can pro they feel more than happy to share.

“Past workshop participants have loved to travel and take a camera or notebook to record their experiences. We want to tool them up with the courage to share with friends and family, on a blog or even attempt publication.”

And Robert Burns – whose 716 known works of poetry and song written often in Scots dialect still resonate two centuries on with millions across the globe – was an obvious spur to illuminate the deep winter proceedings.

Ms West added: “We wanted an occasion that was super colourful to help inspire our workshop participants and give them a solid peg for exploring. A writer’s retreat around Burns Night was a real spur.

“But the wider weekend event will draw on much more than the poet’s legacy – the heroic Highland region, doorstepped by majestic Inverness will provide guests with a wealth of material to produce something really special.”

Not to mention whisky galore and authentic music in the city’s famous bars and restaurants and the most sumptuous hotel experience.
