NEW research has shown that Edinburgh is one of three cities in the UK that provide the most luxury housing outside of London.
Edinburgh ranks just after Brighton and Bath, which have the highest proportion of properties listed at £2m or more, out of 15 UK cities.
London has the highest proportion of luxury housing in the UK, with over 8% of its market selling at over £2m.
With 0.8% of Edinburgh’s market also selling at this price point, the Scottish capital ranks at the top of the table for luxury housing north of the border.
In Edinburgh’s New Town, eight-bedroom and six-bathroom houses can sell for over £4m, in areas such as India Street and Manor Place.
The research was conducted by eXp Luxury, a luxury real estate program that specialises in high-cost homes across the globe.
Their findings show that across Britain as a whole, there are over 9,000 homes listed for £2m or more in the current market, equating to just 2% of all homes listed for sale today.
Edinburgh placed just after Brighton, where 1.3% of all homes command a big budget, and Bath was runner-up to London at 3.1%.
This comes as the Scottish Government has been forced to address the housing emergency that was announced in May this year.
Amongst rising rent and increasing levels of homelessness, there are calls for more housing to be built, and for rent prices to be capped before they reach sky-high levels.
Yesterday, the government voted on the first stage of the Housing (Scotland) Bill, which aims to protect tenant’s rights, but has been slammed by some for not promising anywhere near the amount of housing as the UK Government.
