Charming Christmas cards made by Edinburgh school pupils light up bus shelters on Princes Street

BUS shelters on Princes Street are getting an adorable makeover, as they are being adorned with Christmas cards made by pupils from schools across the city.

The designs were unveiled yesterday and have been designed by 12 students from schools throughout the capital.

As part of the annual Seasons Greetings’ artwork competition, run by JCDecaux UK, 12 lucky winners were picked to have their Christmas cards light up Princes Street.

Some designs include a snowy postbox in a blustering winter scene and a painting of Rudolph the Red Nosed Reindeer.

Three young winners joined by City of Edinburgh Council Leader, Cammy Day and Lord Provost, Robert Aldridge.

The set of 12 cards will brighten up Princes Street this weekend and are on display on digital bus shelter screens from Thursday 28 November to Sunday 1 December.

Young creatives from primary and secondary schools across Edinburgh were invited to enter the competition, which is now in its eighth year.

This year, winners include Eshaal Ahmed (Drummond High School), Elsie Smith (Bruntsfield Primary School), Lilia Walas (Braidburn School), Lily Stokes (Parsons Green Primary School), Suri Pirani Carrasco (Drummond High School), Mark Downie (Pilrig Park School), Leo Stojicevic (St Mary’s Leith Primary school), Chimamanda Umezuluike (St Augustine’s RC High School), Richard Nwokocha (Gorgie Mills), Calum Laing (Nether Currie Primary school), Ellie Glegg (Nether Currie Primary school), and Mohammed Morol (Dalry Primary school).

The designs were unveiled yesterday, when three of the young winners were joined by City of Edinburgh Council Leader, Cammy Day and Lord Provost, Robert Aldridge.

Cammy Day, Council Leader at the City of Edinburgh Council said: “The standard of artwork in this year’s competition made it really difficult to narrow down the entries to just 12 to feature on digital screens on Princes Street.

“I want to thank the teaching staff at schools across the city who have encouraged their pupils to get involved in the competition, and congratulate the youngsters who have had their creative artworks recognised.”

Lord Provost, Robert Aldridge said: “Every year I am blown away not only by the number of entries we receive to the Seasons Greetings’ competition but by the standard of creativity from children and young people across the city.

“It’s amazing for pupils and their families to see their artwork on display on Princes Street, and I know that the designs will delight shoppers this weekend.”

Mike MacLennan, new business development and partnership manager at JCDecaux UK said: “We are delighted to be supporting this wonderful artwork competition once again, working with The City of Edinburgh Council to showcase the talent and creativity of young artists in Edinburgh.

“This annual display on digital bus shelter screens brings festive cheer to people out and about on Princes Street.”
