Dundee locals catch glimpse of James McAvoy as Scots star joined in filming for directorial debut

DUNDEE locals have caught a glimpse of James McAvoy around the city as the Scots star filmed for his directorial debut.

One resident spotted the 45-year-old on Murraygate in the city centre yesterday, after filming for biopic California Schemin’ started on Monday.

With it reportedly being the last day of filming in the City of Discovery, a crowd had gathered hoping to catch a glimpse of any action.

California Schemin’ tells the true story of two Scots rappers who pretended to be American in an attempt to be taken seriously in the music industry.

The X-Men star will also appear in a minor role in the film, the release date for which is yet to be announced.

The footage shows McAvoy surrounded by crew members and bags of kit as a crowd starts to gather on the pedestrianised street.

He has a camera around his neck as a man wearing headphones next to him adjusts a larger camera on a tripod.

The crowds respectfully stay back behind a red sign reading, “filming in progress”, in the middle of the street.

It was shared to social media yesterday with the caption: “Erm (sic) just met James McAvoy in Dundee?”

It has since received over 46,000 likes and more than 440 comments from excited Scots sharing their reactions.

One said: “That’s cool. It will be fun to see the film when it comes out. I like James but couldn’t be f****d standing there. Getting auld (sic) and it’s too cold.”

Another commented: “The only interesting thing to ever happen here to be honest.”

A third joked: “Film’s definitely called ‘The Life of a Dundee Jakey (sic)’.”

Another wrote: “You’re better than me. I would’ve screamed.”

A fifth added: “Wish I could just wake up, walk out my house and there’s James McAvoy in all his glory.”
