Edinburgh locals debate their “most hated” places in the capital – with several tourist favourites on the list

EDINBURGH locals have taken to social media to debate their “most hated” places in the capital.

A post online yesterday asked those living in Edinburgh what their least favourite spot in the capital was – and residents were quick to oblige.

Scots capitalised on the opportunity and slammed various streets, restaurants, road features, bus stops and establishments.

Several tourism favourites were frequently suggested by residents with an axe to grind, including the likes of the Greyfriars Bobby statue and Princes Street.

The east end of Princes Street, complete with the bus stop outside the Apple store and the Waverley Station entrance were popular locations, with some suggesting the stop outside the store is a “rammy” where “bus stop etiquette goes to die”.

Another suggested Princes Street in general, citing that the area is “starting to feel really sad” due to several shops closing and vacant units looking out onto one of the city’s busiest streets.

Establishments including Brewhemia, Asda at The Jewel, The Gyle shopping centre and more were subject to complaints from disgruntled locals too.

Various streets and pedestrian routes were also called out by infuriated locals withPicardy Place at the top of Leith Walk being dubbed a “horribly designed bit of road”.

Shandwick Place and Lothian Road were frequent suggestions whilst South Bridge and its bus stops was also slammed as “always busy with people waiting for a bus, pedestrians walking by and no one quite sure where to stand, where to walk”.

Tourist spots were often a source of upset for locals with the Greyfriars Bobby statue being suggested multiple times, with one Scot claiming the pavement should be widened or the statue moved to reduce foot traffic.

One major upset for locals though was North Bridge, with its construction and road works having rumbled on since 2021 and causing overcrowding and traffic jams.

Ongoing construction at a number of locations in the city have caused upset for locals with many focusing on projects that have seemingly taken years to complete.

The post made to social media yesterday was captioned: “What is your hyper-specific most hated place in Edinburgh?

“What spot in Edinburgh gets your goat?

“I hate the stretch of South Bridge from Hunter Square to the Sainsbury’s on South Bridge.

“The combination of the bus stop queues, the commuters and the tourists makes me dread that section every time.”

The post has received over 400 comments from disgruntled locals who have a bone to pick with the capital.

One user wrote: “The bus stop outside the Apple shop, where bus stop etiquette goes to die.”

Another added: “Can’t stand Brewhemia. Loathsome owners. Full of tossers.

“Area wise I’d not go as far as to say I hate anywhere. Would rather spend a day roaming Niddrie than an hour in Brewhemia.”

A third said: “That bit at the top of Waverley Steps gives me the fear all the time, combo of busy train station entrance and exit, plus all the people coming and going along Princes Street and the bus stops there too.

“Just a huge clusterf**k of people.”

Another commented: “The statue of Greyfriars Bobby, always full of people taking photos. I always have to walk on the road to get past.”

A fifth replied: “I once dropped a sausage roll in a puddle outside Superdrug on Lothian Road. I always avoid that area now.”
