WATCH as a vigil in Glasgow to remember the lives lost in the 7 October attacks is interrupted by a counter-protest group.
Grassroots organisation Glasgow Friends of Israel hosted the event outside Kelvingrove Art Gallery in the city’s west end on Sunday.
While those gathered listened peacefully to speeches, a crowd of pro-Palestine demonstrators soon formed behind them.
Although kept well apart by police, they could be heard shouting through a megaphone in an attempt to drown the speakers out.
Footage shared to social media shows the vigil from both sides.
A group can be seen listening to a woman standing on the front steps of the gallery, waving Israeli flags and heart-shaped balloons.
However, it is impossible to hear her due to the amplified shouts of another woman in the crowd behind, reportedly representing the Gaza Genocide Emergency Committee.
She can be heard calling out “five, six, seven, eight” as the protestors respond with “free Palestine” chants as they wave the flags of Palestine and Lebanon.
The woman on the steps is forced to shout so that she can be heard as she introduces a speaker.
Footage from somebody amongst the pro-Palestine group shows their viewpoint from behind the wall of police officers.
The crowd chants “Free, free Palestine”, stamping their feet to make as much noise as they can.
The same woman shouts: “Bombing aid workers is a crime.”
Claims have been made as to the identity of the woman leading the chanting, but it is unclear from the footage who or where she is amongst the crowd.
The original footage was shared to social media on Sunday with the caption: “The peaceful vigil for those who lost their lives on 7 Oct 2023 that took place at Kelvingrove in Glasgow was shouted down by a counter protest, which is very disrespectful.
“There’s a claim that the female shouting them down was director of Call it Out charity Jeanette Findlay. Can anyone confirm?”
It has since received over 1,800 likes and more than 120 comments from Scots keen to share their thoughts.
One wrote: “Disgusting behaviour. There’s a time and a place and that wasn’t it. Same happened at a vigil for a girl murdered in France with pro-immigration protesters.
“They don’t give a f**k about anyone.”
A second commented: “So a vigil for those who were murdered disrupted by this protest.
“I accept that different communities can have different views but take your protest elsewhere and be respectful to those remembering the murdered.”
Another said: “Whatever your views, this is intrinsically deeply disrespectful and those who can’t see it have lost something of their better selves.”
A fourth wrote: “Disgusting behaviour which is oddly tolerated by Police Scotland.”
Another added: “It frustrates the hell out of me when people don’t stop loudmouth protesters like this woman. I couldn’t stand there and let her get away with it.”
