A NATO submarine was spotted surfacing from the depths of a busy Edinburgh port leaving local onlookers in awe.
The submarine emerged from the water in the port of Ocean Terminal on Monday in the capital’s Leith area and has remained at the port over the last two days.
The Dutch submarine, named HNLMS Dolfijn, has been in active service since 1993 and arrived in Leith following a series of NATO exercises.
The walrus-class Dutch sub is a diesel electric powered submersible and is no stranger to Ocean Terminal having visited the capital’s ocean port before in 2017.
Stunning video and pictures of the military sub were captured by locals as it rested in port over the previous two days.
Video of the sub’s arrival was captured by one lucky local who caught the moment it breached on camera.
The footage shows the sub emerging from the depths of the port between two tugboats that tow it into shore.
Later the same evening a picture of the sub resting at port under the cover of darkness was captured by another local.
Footage of the sub’s arrival was shared to social media on Monday with the caption: “NATO Sub at Ocean Terminal.”
The post has since received over 370 likes and more than 50 comments from impressed Scots.
One user wrote: “Bringing in the big guns for the final part of the Ocean Terminal demolition.”
Another replied: “Surprised how deep that dock must be.”
