Scots capitalise on advertising opportunity as posters are plastered on infamous cone atop Duke of Wellington statue

THE infamous cone on the head of the Duke of Wellington statue in Glasgow has been exploited for advertising space by cunning Scots.

A cultural staple of Scotland’s biggest city, the cone has capped the top of the statue since at least the 1980s and is replaced almost immediately every time it is taken down.

However, crafty Scots seem to have finally spotted an opportunity to use the cone for their own gain and have plastered it with advertising.

The world-famous cone has been photographed with several posters and fliers taped to it with intuitive Scots grabbing the opportunity to advertise their businesses, shows and products.

A picture of the infamous cone was shared to social media showing a number of homemade fliers and posters strapped all over it.

The orange plastic of the cone has been completely obscured by advertisements in what could be seen as either a clever business move or a sad state of affairs as yet more public space is dominated by adverts.

Possibly the most famous cone in the whole world, the small amount of advertising space it provides has been successfully leveraged by a number of Scots

Posters and fliers strapped to the cone are bound to gather huge amounts of attention online and in person, providing the perfect marketing opportunity.

The marketing strategy was dreamt up seemingly overnight with Scots business owners fully capitalising on the free and prominent advertising space.

A social media post showing the cones’ new advertisements was shared on Monday with the caption: “They’re putting adverts on the cone now.”

It has since received over 300 likes and more than 90 comments from divided Scots.

One user said: “Glasgow Council. Bolt the bloody thing up there. It’s the safest, cheapest and happiest route for almost everyone.”

Another wrote: “Can’t beat a bit of effective advertising eh.”

A third replied: “Can we not have anything without having a damn ad shoved down our throats?”

Another commented: “Monetising absolutely everything, disgraceful behaviour.”

A fifth added: “My low stakes conspiracy is that the council are now renting it out as advertising space.”
