Leading trio of housing providers deliver 66 accessible homes
THREE of Scotland’s leading Housing Associations have celebrated the delivery of innovative homes in Dundee to support independent living and help address the housing emergency in Scotland.
In an event at the Charleston homes in Dundee yesterday, MP for Dundee Chris Law and MSP for Dundee City West, Joe Fitzpatrick, joined Blackwood Homes & Care, Bield Housing & Care and Hillcrest Homes to mark the official handover of the first phase of the homes.
The £17.5 million Charleston development, led by Blackwood, features 66 highly adapted, technologically advanced homes that will make a huge dent in the city’s waiting list for accessible accommodation.
This pioneering project highlights the power of partnership in addressing Scotland’s housing emergency and transforming independent living with Bield acquiring 24 homes and Hillcrest 25, while Blackwood retains the remainder.
Scheduled for completion in Autumn 2024, the development features a mix of two-bedroom flats and larger family homes, based on the award-winning Blackwood House design, all equipped with state-of-the-art technology and design features that facilitate independent living.
Among these innovations are lift access, remotely controlled home automation systems, and digital care technologies, all integral to the award-winning Blackwood House design.
For Chris Law MP, this event holds a deeply personal significance. Having spent part of his childhood in care, including time living in a Blackwood home with his mother who had multiple sclerosis, Mr Law has a unique perspective on the importance of accessible, supportive housing.
He said: “My own experience living in a Blackwood home gave me firsthand insight into how crucial these adaptive living spaces are.
“They don’t just provide shelter, they offer independence, dignity, and a sense of home to those who need it most. This project in Dundee is not just about buildings – it’s about transforming lives and communities.”
Simon Fitzpatrick, Chief Executive of Blackwood said: “By working collaboratively with Bield and Hillcrest, we’ve demonstrated that homes that help people live independently can be delivered at scale”.
“Together, we have demonstrated the roll out of homes that truly meet the evolving needs of our communities.”
Drew Moore, Director of Assets at Bield said: “These new homes will significantly enhance our offering in Dundee, providing modern, accessible living spaces that support independence and well-being.
“Our mission is to help people live independently for as long as possible, and we are proud to be working with like-minded organisations to make this a reality.”
The Charleston development has already welcomed its first residents, marking a significant step forward in providing adaptive housing solutions for individuals with varying levels of needs across Dundee.
Chief Executive of Hillcrest, Angela Linton said: “We’re proud to be part of this collaborative effort and coming together to celebrate this project.
“These new homes represent more than just buildings, they’re a testament to what can be achieved when organisations come together with a shared vision.
“This development will make a real difference in addressing housing need in Dundee.”
Fife-based Campion Homes was appointed as lead contractor in 2022 to deliver the innovative properties.
Blackwood operates more than 1,700 properties across 29 local authorities and invests in innovation and technology to help people live life to the full.
Bield is a leading provider of housing and care services for older people across Scotland. Founded in 1971 with one housing development, Bield now supports more than 5,000 customers across more than 170 developments.
Established in 1967, Hillcrest is one of Scotland’s largest housing associations, with over 7000 social rent homes in Dundee, Edinburgh, Angus, Perthshire, Fife and Aberdeen.
