Cyclist narrowly avoids nasty accident after cable theft leaves deep hole in cycle path

A CYCLIST has narrowly avoided a nasty accident after coming across a deep hole on a cycle path after an alleged theft of electric cables.

Anthony Pope was riding along Falmer Road in Rottingdean, East Sussex yesterday when he came across the open shaft, used for access to underground cables.

The would-be thieves had failed to replace the cover, leaving a hazardous trap for anybody using the path.

Anthony shared a snap of the path to social media yesterday, Brits were quick to respond with their thoughts.

The hole presented a serious danger to pedestrians.
The hole presented a serious danger to pedestrians.

The path, used by cyclists and pedestrians, runs alongside a main road and was left with a deep hole right in the middle of it.

An exposed rectangular opening where a metal cover has been removed leaves a deep drop down into the ground exposed, presenting a serious danger to pedestrians and cyclists.

A metal cover can be seen discarded at the side of the hole by the thieves who seemingly attempted to steal cables from under the pavement.

Anthony shared the picture to social media yesterday with the caption: “Elite level cycling infrastructure.”

It has since received over 150 likes and a host of comments from social media users keen to give their opinions.

One commented: “And drivers ask why cyclists don’t use cycle lanes.”

Another said: “Imagine the response and money spent if it was a metre to the right.”

A third asked: “Is that bunny hop practice?”

Anthony replied: “Bunny. Plop.”

Another joked: “How else could you follow the sign and ride on top of the pedestrians?”

A fifth said: “Fall in, quick, and get a payout.”

Although a keen cyclist, Anthony was previously known for his cycling-inspired comedic scenes made with Playmobil figures, which were published in the now-defunct Procycling magazine
