Charity calls for sustained backing as demand for provision soars
SCOTLAND’S first and only further education college for young people with complex needs has secured critical funding for a further year.
The Scottish Government has agreed to award £340,000 to support Corseford College and its 38 students with the delivery of education, physical therapies and life-skills development.
That decision is a relief to its charity operators, Capability Scotland, the 39 dedicated teaching and support staff as well as the students and parents whose lives have been transformed by the provision.
Opened in 2022 the college, now based in Inchinnan, Renfrewshire is entering the third year of a pilot period, in which it is working to validate the case for a rollout of satellite centres across the country.
Brian Logan, Chief Executive of Capability Scotland, said: “The Scottish Government’s commitment for one more year is welcome. There is clear demand for this provision and without Corseford College, this group of young people would be denied the opportunity to continue their educational journey.
“We will work tirelessly over the coming year to secure a sustainable funding solution to ensure that our students can continue to receive the education they are entitled to.
“Our college is a lifeline for these young people, providing not only education, but the care and skills development they require to lead fulfilling lives.”
Without continued funding, Scotland risks having no dedicated further education provision for school leavers with complex needs, leaving families without essential support and students without crucial education pathways.
Brian Logan added: “Going forward, we call on the Scottish Government to recognise the critical role we play and to provide the necessary funding to ensure that no young person with complex needs is left without a positive destination after school.”
The charity is continuing to engage with the Scottish Government to address this funding gap and secure a long-term solution, and is also seeking additional support from private trusts and public fundraising to bridge the shortage.
