A HOLOCAUST memorial has been vandalised by “utter scumbags” who carved the words “Free Palestine” into the monument.
Locals noticed that the memorial in a section of Gedling Country Park in Nottinghamshire had been defaced on Thursday.
Unidentified vandals attacked the memorial – which was opened in March 2023 – etching the phrase permanently into the metal.
Brits have since condemned the act, branding the perpetrators “sad and disrespectful”, before pointing out the irony of alleged anti-fascists targeting a Holocaust memorial.
The memorial garden that hosts the vandalised artwork was officially opened in March 2023 to commemorate both the victims and survivors of the Holocaust.
It consists of a metal sculpture resembling a flame surrounded by a circular walkway and flower beds.
The orange-brown sculpture has now been permanently scarred though, as one snap from a local reveals.
The metal now has scrawled, messy block capitals etched across it – presumably by a stone or a sharp object – reading “Free Palestine”.
The vandalism was shared to social media on Thursday with the caption: “In a quiet corner of a tranquil country park in Nottinghamshire there is a Holocaust memorial, which someone has scratched ‘Free Palestine’ onto.
“A Holocaust memorial.”
It garnered outrage from locals who left over 240 likes and more than 65 comments slamming the cowardly vandals.
One user said: “Whoever did that deserves a smack on the gob.”
Another wrote: “That will be the anti-fascist crew – making fascists proud. Appalling.”
A third replied: “This is sickening.”
Another commented: “For f**k’s sake, utter scumbags.”
A fifth added: “How very sad and disrespectful.”
