WATCH the moment a cyclist is dealt instant karma when they are stopped by police for running two sets of red lights.
Officers patrolling in an unmarked car clocked the brazen cyclist on Onslow Street in Guildford, Surrey, last Thursday.
The officers watched on in disbelief as the bike casually sailed through two red lights in a row but wasted no time in turning their lights on and pulling the cheeky bloke over, where he was swiftly handed a fixed penalty notice.
Dashcam footage from the police car shows the offending cyclist right in front, approaching the first set of traffic lights, which are already on red.
As cars in the right-hand lane slow to a stop, the rider makes no effort to slow down and whizzes through the junction.
An automated voice inside the car signals the activation of the blue lights as the officers make a move to stop the cyclist.
However, they then have more reason to do so, as the cyclist also fails to stop at the next set of red lights along the road.
Activating the siren, the officers drive around the bike and pull in front, stopping the cyclist in his tracks.
One officer can be heard shouting: “pull in.”
The footage was shared to social media yesterday with the caption: “Vanguard Road Safety Team officers patrolling in an unmarked car on Thursday witnessed this cyclist flagrantly contravening multiple red lights in Guildford town centre.
“The rider was handed a fixed penalty notice. Reminder: red lights mean stop for all road users.”
It has since received over 1,000 likes and more than 100 comments from social media users keen to share their opinions.
One commented: “I think, if he is caught doing the same thing again, then I think the fixed penalty notice should be ‘doubled’ every time he ‘flouts’ the law, until such a time he gets the ‘message’.”
Another said: “Beautiful. Sick to death of seeing this kind of behaviour by cyclists. Well done.”
A third wrote: “He’d be the first to put a picture/video up on social media if a vehicle jumped a red light and almost had him off.”
A fourth said: “Wow. Going a full 10mph? A truly stunning waste of police time. Please do something about irresponsible drivers.”
Another added: “Ridiculous. But you don’t bother with electric bikes and everybody riding on the pavement.”
Speaking today, Sergeant Dan Pascoe of the Vanguard Road Safety Team said: “We felt it was important to share this video to show that we will deal robustly with any motorists who contravene red traffic lights and other signals on our roads.
“We know the majority of cyclists do follow the rules and regulations of our highways, and the minority who don’t are not just giving their fellow cyclists a bad name but are putting themselves and those around them at risk.
“We expect all motorists to obey the legislation designed to keep them and others safe, and my team will enforce any violator, whether a driver or cyclist.
“We can’t be everywhere, but we could be anywhere.”
