EDINBURGH locals have been left baffled after a convertible Mini was seemingly dumped in the Union Canal.
The motor was spotted partially submerged in the water near Wester Hailes in the south-west of the city yesterday.
The driver and any passengers appear to have just abandoned the convertible, which sat in the middle of the canal with the door open and the roof down.
With no clues as to how it ended up there, social media users have been quick to share their theories and jokes on the incident.
The snaps show the top half of the car, including the now-ruined seats, visible above the murky water.
The convertible roof is lowered, and the driver’s door is sitting open, suggesting the occupants have attempted to escape.
With no obvious damage to the reeds and banks at the side of the canal though, it is unclear how exactly it entered the water.
The snap was shared to social media yesterday with the caption: “People just dump anything in the canal.”
It has since received over 280 likes and more than 40 comments from locals clearly amused by the situation.
One said: “I saw a couple police and someone trying to fish it out this morning. Wester Hailes is a fun place.”
Another commented: “Looks like someone finally found a novel solution to the endless ‘Where can I park for free in Edinburgh’ posts.”
A third quipped: “These pop-up Fringe venues are getting out of hand.”
Another wrote: “Flooded the engine… again.”
A fifth made reference to the 1969 film The Italian Job, writing: “The Union Canal Job, a comedy directed by Peter Collinson.”
