FURIOUS locals have hit out at Edinburgh’s “unionist” council over the declining state of the city’s pavements.
The outrage spread as one Scot shared an image online on Saturday showing the depressing state of the capital’s roadsides.
The blame has been placed solely on the City of Edinburgh Council as dozens of weeds and plants were spotted taking over the cracks in the city’s paving slabs.
With the Edinburgh Fringe Festival less than two weeks away, locals have slammed the Labour council and urged the authority to address the dire state of upkeep the city is in.
An image of the poorly maintained pavements shows a street in Edinburgh’s New Town, covered as far as the eye can see in weeds.
Plants of all description can be seen growing up through cracks in the pavement and the gaps between cobbles on the road.
The poorly maintained pavement boasts as much greenery as it does paving, with weeds flourishing unchecked on the public walkway.
The base of a road sign fixture has been completely obscured by the rampant, unchecked growths.
Meanwhile the gutter between the kerb and the road is home to dozens of small green plants, sprouting around drains and between paving stones.
Rampant and unchecked growth presents an eyesore and a tripping hazard to locals and the thousands of visitors set to attend the Fringe Festival.
One local took to social media on Saturday to share the image with the caption: “Absolute state of the pavements in Edinburgh. Well done the unionist council.”
Their post received over 635 likes and more than 220 comments from other furious locals.
One user said: “Are they rewilding the pavements?”
Another added: “They don’t care. This is what you get when you get a Labour council.”
A third wrote: “Was getting so bad around me, I actually went out and sprayed them myself.”
Another commented: “Common sight all over Edinburgh. Part of ongoing council cuts despite no cuts in council tax increases.”
A fifth replied: “Princes Street is an embarrassing state too. Well done Labour.”
